New Development in R & D on Mustard Oil – Health Aspects


August 10, 2004 -- Mustard Research and Promotion Consortium (MRPC) had organized a seminar "New Developments in R & D on Mustard Oil – Health Aspects" on July 21, 2004 at India International Centre, New Delhi. In the Seminar, Prof.S.C.Manchanda, Former Head, Department of Cardiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, informed that India is witnessing an upward trend towards chronic diseases including atherosclerosis, coronary heart diseases, stroke, diabetes mellitus and cancer. High fat intake and type of fat consumed have been identified as the major risk factor of these diseases. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (especially n-3 type) lower cholesterol and are heart healthy. An oil with low saturated fats, high monounsaturated fats and n-3 polyunsaturated fats like mustard oil is considered good for the heart.

Prof.Rakesh Tandon, Former Head, Department of Gastroenterology, AIIMS said that Mustard oil is an ideal oil as apart from low SFA, high MUFA and balanced ideal ratio of n-3 and n-6 PUFA ratio, has anti-oxidants, alpha-tocopherol, carotenoids, which has anti-ageing properties, remedy for stomach and skin diseases. Mustard oil has "Allyl-Isothiocyanate", which has anti-cancerous properties. Use of mustard oil not only reduces heart disease and cancer like fatal diseases and stomach ailments, it also imparts soft and pliable texture to skin.

Mrs.Saroj Bala, Former Head, Department of Dietetics, AIIMS said that Mustard oil is our ancient indigenous oil. It is also very good for health. But in cities, it was noticed that people have been switching over to other edible refined oils, since a decade or more. The result is before us that number of patients suffering from heart disease, have been increasing day by day. Therefore, it is advisable that we should start using mustard oil as a cooking medium.
